SEWG’s mandate is to address 17 RSDS issues on sustainable ecosystems, wildlife and biodiversity. The Working Group is developing recommendations for a management system to address cumulative effects of oil sands development on ecosystems and landscapes in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

This will be done by pursuing sustainable development, which is defined as shared responsibility that is based on integrating environmental protection with economic growth and resource use.

The technical work of SEWG is completed by Task Groups made up of SEWG members, external technical experts and/or consultants.
